Tarnia is a realism artist from rural south-east Queensland known for her lifelike animal portraits celebrating the often-overlooked beauty of our animal kingdom. Tarnia works to render the character of every animal she paints, not just a biological likeness.

Her approach is shaped by an unusual combination. An academic background in biomedical science reinforces her fascination with anatomical precision, while a lifetime devoted to animals (as a competitive equestrian, and proud mum to beloved animals on her homestead) gives its intimacy. It took many years as an artist to harmonise the tension between emotional depth and analytical precision, both within her creative process, and her inner self.

The compelling voice within each portrait is drawn from the solace nature provided Tarnia through all of life's challenges. Through her work, she hopes to inspire a sense of awe, compassion and appreciation for the animal kingdom, and to preserve it in a way that feels soulful, not just skilled. 

Alongside her original works and commissions, Tarnia shares her process with beginner and intermediate artists, teaching the fundamentals of realism through animal portraiture.
